so my summer slot on wlur is thursdays from 5-6pm. it’s a bit shorter than i’d like (so much to play!) but wlur operates on an abbreviated schedule due to limited dj availability and station accessibility. in any case, it should give me a good excuse to learn how to tighten up the shows.

the ‘engineered by albini’ theme will continue through the summer, mainly because even i’ve forgotten all the stuff he’s been involved in. the thrush hermit ep that starts off the show this week is another example of something that i’ve owned for probably seventeen years now and i never realized he was involved in. i want to give myself the benefit of the doubt and say ‘i must have forgotten’ but i’m sure i assess music differently at 34 than i did at 17.

while listening to the new cloud nothings album on the way home i came up with a new theme to start off each show- tracks engineered by steve albini. he’s recorded hundreds of bands from nobodies to nirvana and always manages to capture a raw but full sound. he’s not your typical studio dork- he refuses to be referred to as a producer, constantly defers to the band and prefers to have his name omitted from liner notes. we’ll be starting off the next however many shows with some of my favorite tracks he’s recorded at electrical audio.

so today marks the first show of the new semester and the last show of our “the dark end of the street” retrospective. we heard a total of thirteen different versions from lee hazlewood and ann-margret, the afghan whigs, the flying burrito brothers, aretha franklin, cat power, james carr, elvis costello and the imposters, richard and linda thompson, dan penn (who wrote the song), diamanda galas, joe tex, eels, and billy bragg. now i need to figure out a good way to start off the next however many shows… anyone have a theme suggestion?

the show is going up a day after it was recorded because yesterday was nothin’ but macrock. before racing off to harrisonburg myself, i got to do a two and a half hour show and i made a point to play a bunch of the bands that would be playing that night. i hope it prompted at least one lexington resident to make the trek.
